The Hungry Clam looked cute and charming like a diner from the outside. We could see that it was busy and thought it might be good. We waited nearly 40 minutes for our fried platter to come out. The fries were soggy (as they were fresh cut) but it just didn't seem to work very well. The fried fish was also overcooked and there had to be more batter than fish on them. I did like that they had Red Hook's Copperhook on draft. I probably wouldn't come back here as it was more of a tourist trap :-\

You just have to love a diner! We have eaten here several times, food is always good. Two eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast for $7.99... A real bargain in the San Juan Islands. To top it off, service is great! I may have had better breakfasts in my life, but we always look forward to a trip to Friday Harbor to eat here.

Overly fried food with batter that tasted old and soggy. Plus they over charged me. Other than the friendly waitress and the speed the food arrived, really not worth going to.

Bad service. Old fry oil. Limp and overlooked fries. Rubbery beer batter. Great tartar sauce could not mask the cardboard fries.

Standard breakfast. Not bad, not great. Seems fresh-ish, but use the hot sauces, salt, and pepper offered to add some flavoring.

My first trip to the San Juan Islands and I wanted some reasonably priced fish and chips. The Hungry Clam seemed to fit the bill. I got the seafood platter (Fried Fish/scallops/clams/fries). The portions were large which is always a plus. I must say, the fried, beer battered cod was one of the better ones I have had recently. The scallops and clam strips were okay but not as fantastic as the fish. I have been on a fish and chip craving as of late and this hit the spot.

With a prominent location in Friday Harbor, this place is just up from the ferry line and easy to find. Big portions! Great milkshakes (about 20 flavors- Toasted Almond too). Had chili cheese fries and a coffee shake. If you like fried seafood set in a nostalgic 1950s diner, gotta check out the Clam.

Great fish. Fresh halibut from Alaska. Not killer expensive either.

Cheap greasy seafood. Didn't like the fried fish; way too much breading. French fries were horrible - like they hadn't changed out the oil for weeks. All they have is a cool location near the ferry docks. I would avoid.

We had been around the island and came back into Friday Harbor to grab dinner. We didn't realize everything closed at 6pm! Eeek. We knew we wanted some seafood for dinner so we skipped place a couple places and ended at the Hungry Clam. We had to wait for a booth inside because it was so packed. Luckily it was 7pm and we knew they were open to 9pm. We ordered our food and our drinks and shakes came right away. We chatted while waiting, and then another in our group decided to add a shake. The waitress said not a problem, went to the kitchen changed our order and out came the shake. A few of us ordered the bread bowls with chowder, which hit the spot. One gentleman ordered one piece of fish and fries. Goodness - the piece of fish was the size of a whole fish! My husband ordered the clams and fries and enjoyed them. The coffee shake was probably the best shake on the list!

Waitress was good. Food was plain and greasy. Decent if you're in the mood.

What a difference a year or so can make. I try to go back to these places and see how they are doing... much improved over my last visit they are. I have to say; go ahead and give it try! Still greasy, but much friendlier. Cool!

Three of us had breakfast. Very friendly, pleasant waitress. Breakfast food was solid and nice view of the harbor.

If you love your chips limp and mushy and floating in a puddle of oil, you'll love the Hungry Clam. The fish itself was overcooked and sweating oil as well. Service mid-day was good but the food quality was awful. Skip this one.

  • Kevin N.

I thought the food was good and you got a lot for what you pay for. Fries were excellent and the fish was crispy and extremely moist. Would definitely go back when we return to Friday Harbor.

    (4)
  • Ron L.

Nice location and good service but my plate of fish and chips was void of anything remotely crunchy. Should have sent it back.

Only place in town open at 6am. Pretty good food for price. had biscuits and gravy, and came with a sausage patty that was great!

If you want fried food on the island this is the place to go. Their shakes, malts and floats are great.

Finally a decent deal for your $$ on Friday Harbor! I ordered the combo fish platter and while the fries were terrible (overdone and soggy seems a consistent complaint) the fish was GREAT. I was on the hunt for the best fish & chips on the island and I think the Hungry Clam had the tastiest batter. My husband ordered the Malibu grilled chicken sandwich, which he also enjoyed. Portions are huge! While we didn't order one, they had a HUGE selection of yummy looking milkshakes. Services was okay. We got what we needed in a timely fashion but like many of the under 21 yr old servers we had at Friday Harbor, she absolutely did not look like she wanted to be there. Thank goodness the food made up for the service.

  • V F.

This place is awful, I've had better food in dive bars. The service is rude. I found the fried fish to be extremely salty and off. When I went to send it back I was told that was my personal opinion. The server did not offer me anything else instead she brought the bill out and I was charged for that mess. Not to mention I got the pleasure of hearing the chef curse me when she forwarded my complaint. NEVER GOING BACK someone needs to teach them better service skills. Offer to replace it with something else or at least deduct part of it off my bill but to be charged for something that you don't get or want? Ridiculous.

  • Lola G.

This place is so inconsistent between both the food and service! Just had my last meal there!!! My breakfast was not cooked as ordered, and the rest was poorly cooked; the waitress never checked back in and when I said that I wanted the bill adjusted she offered no apology, just a rude attitude. How insulting ! I had been there previously and was impressed with their breakfast. There are a few servers who are just plain surly. The owners should really care more...

This place is pretty awful - thats why seating is so easy to come by. The view is good, as long as your not looking in the kitchen.

This is the place I come to most often when I fly in to FHR. They make great fish and chips, tender and very flavorful. The beer is a little overpriced but you can find some great local beers here that aren't sold anywhere else but on the island. Seating is easy to come by and you can't beat the view!

Is it possible to give a negative number review? This is the 2nd worse place I have ever eaten at. The girl at the counter was R U D E and very unfriendly. The place its self was super dirty. Why didnt we walk out then because every other place was packed. Guess our first clue should have been that this place only had a few folks in it. The food was really expensive for what it was. My son got 6 mini corn dogs about 2 dozen fries and a fruit cup for about 7. I could have gone to McDonalds got him twice that and with less grease. His food was dripping. I had a Cesar salad a good 1/3 of the lettuce was slimy and rotten with a whitish dressing with no flavor. The clam chowder was just like campbells clam chowder but with hard not quite done potatoes (about 7 in the whole bowl) and no clams. For the love of all things good dont eat here!!!!!

Great diner food with reasonable prices, decent service. We really enjoyed our breakfast and lunch here. Very crispy hash browns, tasty burger with sausage. Keep your expectations real. It's a diner with good prices and nice portions. I'm a foodie and I didn't give it 4 starts for amazing, made-from-scratch culinary treats. I gave it 4 stars for exceeding my expectations as a diner. I will return. We had pancakes and corned beef hash for breakfast. Burgers and Mac n cheese for lunch. Nothing fancy but perfectly executed.

The Fish and Chips is maybe only "world famous" inside the world of The Hungry Clam. Because the fish part was not good. Twice as much batter as the fish, which was flavorless and, the fish was bland as heck. After waiting about 35 minutes for the food, and watching it sit on the shelf for about 5 minutes, it got to us just as you'd expect, like it had 5 minutes to cool off. Luckily the fries were great and that's why they get the two stars. Do yourself a favor and try the fish and chips at Friday's Crabhouse, it is the best on the Island.

  • Detox D.

The name cracks me up. Sounds like a seedy strip club. Da Fish and Chips was on hit tho. The real deal holyfield. Pieces are really large so order accordingly. Very very good. The fries are as if someone went through the labor of picking out all the slightly overcooked crispy good fries out of a homemade batch. Perfecto.

This place is a decent little faux-retro diner right by the ferry terminal in Friday Harbor. Its convenient for a quick bite between parking your car in the ferry line and getting on the ferry. It is perched right on top of a little hill so if you sit outside, you get a nice view of the harbor and surrounding islands. The service was spotty and a little scant but friendly and accommodating. The menu features seafood staples like fish and chips, fried oysters, and a variety of sandwiches. They do not have many veg options, however. The prices reflect the bougie clientele, though I felt they give you a fairly generous portion of food. I ordered the fried oysters and they gave me a decent number of oysters. They were HUGE and tasty, but some of the oysters that seems big were instead just covered in hunks of fried batter. The fries were limp but decently seasoned. My companions ordered the fish and chips and remarked that the fish was soggy and greasy. The shared appetizer of the fried calamari was pretty underwhelming, too. Overall, not a bad spot for some fresh seafood. While the food isn't top notch, its convenient and beautiful location makes it worth a visit.

The management is rude and officious. And this is a place to be avoided. We were a party of 4 on a Wednesday morning at 10am. The only available table had 7-8 places and we were told it was reserved for parties of 5 or more. But as there seemed little prospect that such parties were likely to appear, we asked if we could be seated there. And we were told with no hesitancy and with great abruptness that it was not possible but were welcome to wait. Of course we left immediately. Flexibility and customer service would not be available at this establishment.

Really good BLTA. Really really slow service. Stuffy & hot inside of you go during a summer lunchtime, but there's a nice patio if you get there early enough.

Cute little dinner restaurant. I had the fish & chips and it was pretty good. The portion size was pretty large. I loved how relaxed and old school this place was. If I ever come back I will definitely stop by again :) (fresh local fish)

Wow~! This place was a little slice of heaven! Had the fish and chips - it was absolutely delicious!! A two piece meal was more like four pieces and my grand daughter and I took enough home that we had a full dinner at the motel that night. Fresh fish perfectly battered and cooked to a wonderful golden brown. Fresh hand cut fries were fabulous. The burgers that went by the table looked great as well. I love fish and chips and have had them everywhere I go when near the ocean, and these are as good as it gets. The prices were very reasonable. Grand daughter loved the retro decor. Great view of the harbor inside and out on the patio. Our waitress was as sweet as she possibly could be...and it wasn't for the tip. I will definitely be back. Dang....getting hungry just thinking about them now.....

Decent place for your basic diner breakfast. Pancakes and eggs were good but the waffle was to quote my kids "absolutely terrible mushy mess"

  • Mrs. A.

I love where this place is located. The food looks great but really needs a boost of flavor. The clam chowder looked perfect but tasted a little powdery. The fish and chips looked fantastic but, were very bland. Sizes and prices are very good especially considering the prices of things on this island. I think the batter in the fish needs to not be so thick and needs something is spice it up.

    (3)
  • Melissa J.

This place is decent. Definitely not the best fish and chips I've had, but certainly not the worst. Fish was a bit on the oily side and the batter got soggy quick. The smallest order they have is enough for 2-3 people to snack on. This makes a great place to grab a quick bite before catching the next ferry! Like I always say, YOU WON'T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!

  • Alittle G.

If you want a traditional burger place with fried seafood, this is the place! We sat outside, enjoyed the view, had great fish and chips, and burgers with fries. And shakes! what can you say, uncomplicated fried food and diner dishes. They do it well, and quickly. Nothing amazing, but it lives up to what it sells itself as. Enjoyed ourselves, sat in the sun, and had a great day. Recommend.

This place was just ok. Food is edible but overall the place feels dirty. Kind of slow service. Great view and location but just ok bland food. Might give it a second try after I try others first.

Thoroughly impressed with their fish and chips. The portion they gave was double the size of places surrounding it and much less of a price. They have a decently large menu and are great for lunch. It has more of a diner look and good diner prices. Their staff was friendly and if you sit outside, not only do you have a nice view, but pets are welcome also!

Enjoyed breakfast here on a Saturday morning. French toast was perfect, sausage and egg were good. Husband enjoyed the country fried chicken breakfast plate. We would eat here again for breakfast and maybe try lunch as well. The only negative was the service. It was mediocre and somewhat flat. I don't expect cheery at all, but a little more effort is nice.

Honestly, I'm shocked they have even a 3 star overall rating... It must be the residual effects of a romanticized "weekend get-away" still lingering. The food is no better than average, and honestly it's not even that, since even the greasiest of greasy spoons doesn't go out of their way to add extra grease like this place does. I've taken a chance a few times, or gone with others who insisted on trying the food because the place is next the ferry lines. I've never been impressed, but now I've had enough experience to be objective, and to discount an occasional "bad day". Lightening may sometimes strike twice, but not 4 or 5 times. The place is (over)run by a bunch of teenagers who know how to smile and say "please" and "thank you", (granted, for some places that's a major accomplishment) but they are otherwise oblivious. The service is barely better than none at all. During my last visit, being pretty much the same as all the others, capacity wasn't an issue... there were 3 tables occupied including mine, and there were more wait staff than there were guests. But I literally had to ask for everything after I ordered... Coffee?... Yes. Spoon?... No. Cream?...No. Silver at table... No. Ordered food?... Yes. Condiments for food?... No. More Coffee?... No. Anything else?... No. There was zero anticipation, and no one else seemed to notice or care. Seriously... there are several other places within a block of this place that are much better, and no more expensive. Save yourself from an unpleasant final memory of your weekend on the Island.

Went for breakfast at 8am on a Tuesday. Service was very slow (20 minutes to make eggs), food was mediocre and overpriced. Go somewhere else, or just starve until everything else opens at 9am.

Greasy Fish and Chips. Soggy French fries that we played with cause they drooped over so easily. We had to wrap the fish and chips in napkins to eat them. No silverware was provided to our table to eat with. After lifting a fish up a pool of grease was left on the plate. The Children's portion is really small on the fish and chips. And I'll pass on the mott's apple sauce. Plus side is the outdoor seating. Interesting furnishing on the walls.

We had a spinach, mushroom and cheese omlette with hashbrowns, fruit and a hot chocolate. All was good and the place was pretty crowded on a sunday morning!

Milkshake was great, the burger was too. Love the variety of seating and the retro diner feel with newspapers to read etc..

The beer battered fish really had a strong taste of the beer element enough to make it slightly unfavorable. The scallops however were very good. The wife and her niece expressed their disgust at how filthy the one restroom was.

It was awful from the moment we walked in the door. We were handed menus and told to go downstairs, wrong drinks, waited over an hour then we took it to go only to have received greasy inedible food we dumped directly into the trash, and we were so hungry and looking forward to eating on our boat ride back to Seattle. What a waste of time that could have been spent enjoying the island.

This place is definitely one of the better priced establishments in Friday Harbor. It's a nice little diner, though hard to tell from the outside. My husband ordered the bacon cheeseburger and thought it was great. I had the fish and chips. I would recommend ordering less than you may want, or at least asking your server how big the portions are... because they were almost humorously larger than any other fish and chips I have ever had in my existence. I thought I would want the 2 piece, my husband convinced me to get the 3 piece, and I ended up only eating 1 piece. Also I hear the fries are fresh, not frozen, but either way they were good in a 'Dick's Burgers' kind of way.

So glad we gave this place a chance regardless of other reviews. We stayed in Friday Harbor last spring for the weekend of my babymoon. We ate at our hotel and fancier restaurants but this was our favorite. We had the fish and chips then came back for breakfast the next morning. The food was satisfying, well priced and had good portions. Loved the view of the ferry dock. If we're ever on the island again, we'll definitely visit this cute divey diner again!

After getting ourselves stuffed at Breakfast at Rocky Bay Café, we drove around the island again, then wandered around and visited shops and sat and just watched the harbor activity and relaxed. I thought there was no way we would do lunch, but when the time rolled around, it seemed like we should, since we had to fly back to Anacortes and drive back to Seatac. So we decided on The Hungry Clam. We did not order heavy. Ms T had a bowl of clam chowder. I would rate it barely OK, being a victim of over-thickening with flour, and not a lot else. It looked pretty much like a bowl of white sauce. I ordered a chicken fried steak sandwich that reminded me very much of a breaded tenderloin that you get in the mid-west. The meat was fabricated, but it had that nice fried breading taste. It was OK, but could be better with a real piece of meat. My slaw was also very average, with dressing that did nothing for it. Thanks to a handy bottle of malt vinegar and some salt, I was able to make it wake up. The décor and menu for this place says, "This is a diner". That was what we expected. It is not a great diner. The food is edible, but there is not much love and care going into it. I am awarding two stars, but it is probably 2-1/2. I just can't round up for the chowder in a seafood area of the world.

    (2)
  • Aj H.

If your going to claim worlds best clam chowder and then serve a fellow industry cook a bowl of overpriced canned chowder you'd better have legit fish and chips to go with it............nope!!!!! Literally the worst rendition of a chowder house I have ever been in. No wonder the hotel didn't put them on there places to eat page......I could not be more disappointed with this place. My only plus.......super nice staff.

While they do have the game playing, and it is a quiet little eatery, the views out weighed the food. Had the black bean burger which WAS yummy and it came with a full plate of fries-they, alas were a tad greasy. Overall I would come back to try again as a one time experience is not fair.

  • April B.

Underwhelmed. Went here for dinner on a weeknight and found only 2 staff working. Ordered a combo seafood platter and was informed they were out of oysters. No big deal, but the food was greasy and had little taste. Fries soggy and they charged .50 for cocktail sauce.

  • Joe W.

Service was poor, didn't get a refill on my soda at all, table next to us had ask for a refill. Fish was a little greasy, the shrimp was awful and the portion seemed small. My wife said the fries were awesome.

  • Elissa K.

Heyyyy, tap beers but only for the table next to you. And don't ask your server for a beer recommendation, why would she know? And don't leave the tab on the table too long while you finish your one round. She might need to finish her shift and not get you anything else.

We ate here twice while visiting Friday Harbor. Once for lunch, then for breakfast. Lunch started out at Rumor Mill down the street. After a lack of service we decided to go to the Hungry Clam. We are glad we did. The service is friendly and quick. The burger and fried fish sandwich are great options for lunch. For breakfast, we had the same friendly, quick service. We got a dish that consisted of hash browns covered with veggies, bits of ham, and cheddar cheese-yumm! We also had a basic pancake, egg, and bacon breakfast. This is a good option in Friday Harbor.

Based on my 30 years of working in food service, I'd say this place has it together... Lots of good options to eat... great American grease kitchen.

Solid little vintage diner with good prices. My husband and I went twice during our weekend visit to SJI and enjoyed it both times. I liked the fries, both regular and sweet potato. Had fried shrimp one visit and while tasty, I was hungry a short while after as I didn't find the portion ample. Second visit was a mushroom swiss burger that was just delightful. The atmosphere and service was a bit chaotic (probably due to the location and times we visited) but they were very efficient, all things considered. The view is delightful. Good local beers on tap. We would definitely return!

  • Jenni D.

Unfortunately, I got sick after eating here... I'm assuming it was the clams. I took my first bite of the clam sandwich I ordered and the clam had something relatively nasty in it. I couldn't quite tell what it was, so I just ate around it and proceeded to eat the sweet potato fries. They had good beers on tap, but the service was questionable. Many of the servers were friendly, but one chick kept touching her face and fixing her hair. This wouldn't have been a problem except that she would then make milk shakes and serve food (without washing her hands). Having worked in the food industry a few years, it is a big "no-no" to touch your face, hair, or anything else for that matter when you are serving, etc. Needless to say, I will not be returning any time soon.

My wife and I took a day trip to the island and we got hungry and decided to try this place out. The Hungry Clam. Seems legit! We walked inside and the decor was enough for us to stay and check it out. It has a 50's diner feel to it. We also spotted some fresh cut fries that just looked delicious. It's about a block up from the ferry terminal, right behind where you park to catch the ferries. We opted to sit outside. It was a beautiful day out. We were seated with menus. No one came to check on us for 20-25 minutes for our drink order. It was taking entirely too long to order food or anything. My wife and I set a time that if no one had taken our drink order, we would have left. They had three minutes remaining of the 10 minutes I gave them, which is on top of another 10 minutes that we had already waited. Fortunately, the cooks like to listen to the same kind of music that we do. Coincidentally, the table we chose is right in front of the door which was open to where the cooks are, and they were blasting their music. I could see that as a bad thing, but they were listening to decent music. The food arrived fairly quickly and everything looked fantastic, so at this point we were willing to overlook the issue earlier and chalk it up to a snafu. I ordered the seafood combo, which came with two pieces of cod, claim strips, and 5 scallops. Instead of fries, I ordered the side salad, and went for the cole slaw. The fish was delicious and covered in a traditional beer batter. The clam strips were unremarkable other than saying they were delicious. The scallops were heavily breaded, which was a little overpowering, but the were good. The side salad was great, filled with mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, and was of a nice, big size. The cole slaw was very interesting as in it looked perfect. I like my slaw a specific way, and they pretty much got the way I like it. I don't like mine too vinegary, and maybe a little 'wet". Theirs was a little on the dry side, without much vinegar and mayo. The wife had a three piece fish and chips with slaw. The fish and slaw were the same, but the fries to me stood out. I can see why someone else commented that the "fries are overcooked" or "old fry oil" but the truth is they are not. They look very similar to 5 Guys handmade fries, but are larger, and frankly, taste delicious. They are covered in a all season and fried up exactly to how you want your fries to be. They leave the skins on, which is likely why people in other reviews viewed it as "old oil" or overcooked, but the skins seriously . Another highlight, which might be surprising, is their homemade cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Wow! The cocktail sauce is tangy and sweet and taste of fresh horseradish. The tartar sauce is flavorful and clearly homemade. Both were excellent on the seafood and also for the french fries. All the prices were very reasonable too. We received a lot of food! You could expect to pay a lot more at chain restaurants on the mainland for what we paid. So why am I going to give them 2 stars? Service, or the lack there of. It took them only a minute to seat us, and another 20 minutes to take our drink order and meal order, which when she arrived, no apologies, and just said impersonally "what would you like", indicating to me that they knew they took too long getting to us and never told us her name. I think the kitchen being open and them blaring loud 90's music is bad for them, even though I like what they were playing, I think not everyone would appreciate that and I have to consider that a negative, but I bring that up only in suggestion. The wife and I were liking the music, the older couple next to us we overheard complaining amongst themselves about it. We were checked in on once, which is fine, but it took a long time for that to happen, and we had to track the woman down for the tip. We were there for a grand total of 75 minutes, and the majority of that was waiting around. The waiting did not add to the experience, it took away from it. I know some would suggest that it adds to the experience, but in this case, not so much. I would add some caution to sitting outside if you are an allergy sufferer, as the house immediately upwind from where we sat, right next store, has a garden, which is beautiful, but the pollen in the air was effecting both my wife's eyes as well as my own, and I am not one to suffer from allergies normally. Just a word of caution. The food was really good, which is upsetting. I'd give them a "4" on the food, it was that good. I will go to another restaurant the next time I visit the island. I would recommend the food, but caution people quickly regarding the service. I hate to say that it could be chalked up to a bad day or lack of servers, I saw three waitresses pock their heads out numerous times, look directly at us, and then walk back inside, and none of them were our server. Very disappointing service, good

Good food and ambience with an amazing view of the harbor...but ridiculously slow service. We had to wait for menus, drinks, and the food took close to 45 min from when we ordered. If you've got 2 hours for breakfast, this is the place. I'm so disappointed because it is so cute and clean with great food!

Seems like a relative bargain with Friday Harbor prices. Had the fried clams plate. Came promptly from the fryer with a ton of fries to make it more than filling though I did wish for more clams. Clams were tasty, but the fries are a bit oily/soggy. Service was excellent.

Earlier today, on our final day on the island, my mother and I went to this place for breakfast. We arrived at about 9:45am and there was one couple in front of us waiting to be seated. If you've been there you know how small the entryway is; it does not accommodate individuals waiting to be seated. After we arrived, two other couples arrived. Within about 2 minutes tables quickly started clearing and those of us waiting started to get seated. The couple ahead of us was seated, as was one couple who came after us. There was one table left-it was a larger table (two tables together). The server/seating hostess came to us and stated it would be a few minutes before other tables were available. The server/hostess made all sorts of excuses why we couldn't sit at the table. We then got the menu preparing to get an order to go when another table came open. The server/hostess then made excuses saying she didn't think the cook could get us our order in a timely manner and we'd be better off going somewhere else. It was an indirect, but not so subtle way of letting me and my mother know we were not welcome there and they preferred not to serve us. After a wonderful 4 days on the island, eating in various restaurants and meeting local residents it was an extremely disappointing way to end our time on the island. This place had been recommended earlier that morning and we were looking forward to it. But after the way we were treated, I will be sure not to give them my business during my next visit to the island and recommend others stay away from an establishment that was being discriminatory!

We went to the hungry clam about 2 weeks ago. Walked in there to have dinner with bad attitudes because of our ferry. We walked out thanking god that we missed it!!! First time ever here and love it!! The decorations and the way everything was set up was so much fun to look at and brought back so many memories. My fish was undercooked but our waitress made sure everything got better! When she brought it back to the kitchen i heard multiple swear words. NOT OKAY! The music was too loud in the kitchen and even after the waitress told them several times to turn it down it never got better. Felt bad hearing him yell rude remarks back. The reason for my five stars you might ask? THE WAITRESS! Cute little blonde girl that constantly made me, my wife, and two kids laugh! They were very busy and she still remained calm and treated us like kings. Had a great time! One of the most friendly encounters with a waiter in all my life! Made my trip to friday harbor all the better! We will be back next time we come to friday harbor!

Loved the idea, but the overall experience was not very good. We expected that small town/ great feel. What we got was a tourist stop with ok food at best. Here's my review of the place: - food: ok. I had the homemade hash and eggs. It had no taste and wasn't made the way I asked. - note to the management: there is no reason you can't serve breakfast or lunch. It doesn't take any extra space, time, or knowledge to flip a burger the same time you flip a flap jack! That just screams of cooks with no customer service understanding! And too much power. - best part of the experience.....the server was great! You've got the potential!!

What can I Not say about the Hungry Clam? I LOVE THIS PLACE. Character for such a tiny place, located above the wharf at Port of Friday Harbor. You can see the sea from your widow. The view is amazing. Jill, our server, is glad to see us very time we go in and the service is great Your choice of sides with everything. The best breakfast ever. The fish and chips are incredible. The french fries are homemade, not frozen. It is also family friendly and I can get a Mimosa if I want one.

Swift, friendly service, good fried fish with GREAT fries and tartar sauce, and it doesn't leave that island-pricing aftertaste (by which I mean the sensation, even when everything was right about the experience, that you sure could've paid less for it). You *can* pay less. Probably not on an island, though, and I really appreciate that I've never felt taken by this diner, summer or winter. It's obvious that if they wanted to fleece tourists it'd be simplicity itself, given that they've got a captive, ferry-awaiting audience parked a few feet down the hill from them at all times. I'm giving them only four stars, instead of five, though, because the immediate impression I get upon opening the door is that the place is showing its age and has been used hard. It doesn't make the food taste any less good, but it looks like a black-and-white linoleum-tiled hole in the wall and, also, the servings are impractically large. I've never ordered a single piece of fish and chips anywhere and had to leave nearly as much of it on the plate as I have here because neither fish nor chips hold up as takeout and the servings are just massive.

I'm in the middle of eating, and had to stop to write a review. I'm so shocked by some of the negative reviews of this place. The service was very friendly and extremely fast. Michelle (our server) was cheery and very helpful. She offered to top off our coffee before we'd barely had a chance to have any. THAT is an attentive server. I had the fish and chips, and it was crazy good! My girlfriend had the fish taco, which was fantastic. The portions are huge so order accordingly!

Place is campy and worn, but that adds to its charm as a fried fish and chips staple. I would give it a 2.5 if I could, but, I can't. Yummy: fish sandwich. Okay: clam chowder. Don't order: fries (way over cooked, yet limp) and potato salad (huge serving, one bite, YUCK!). If I could go to lunch again, I would just order the fish sandwich. Service was fine - a lone young woman who could work the tables. Bathroom - "old" and needs to be refreshed and SCRUBBED DOWN.

For breakfast, this is one of the highest quality places I have ever been. The food was amazingly fresh and perfectly cooked--simply delicious. Don't pass this up!!

I highly recommend this place. They made the best breakfast I've had so far on the island. My Wife and I are here for vacation. I had the Denver omelet with hash browns. I substituted my side of hash browns for there special hash browns for a dollar. One of the best moves I've made in a while. They were fast, well priced and good customer service. My wife chose the Friday harbor omelet which she also enjoyed. Then while watching the Seahawks game and waiting for the ferry we enjoyed a wonderful tasting Double malted toasted marshmallow shake. I will come here again next time I visit.

The food was really great! The grilled fish was amazing! Everything we ordered came out quickly. This being said, we had the one server that was actually friendly and on top of things. The others were pretty grouchy! AND there were only two other customers at this point. Once the ferry comes in the riders hit the door full pace and service comes to a crawl.

Order the F&C, mixed Seafood platter, and onion rings. Overall, good. About died from all the fried food later, but that was our fault!! Tarter was very good and plentiful. Fish came out hot. Would skip the mixed platter and onion rings and focus just on the F&C next time.

I would probably try this place again just to be sure. It was recommended to us from a young lady who works on the ferry as the go to place for fish and chips. The fish was cod, and it looked great , but he fish was rubbery. The fries we yummy and so was the slaw. My husbands black bean burger was really tasty. I love the 50's decor and the service was great. They have a HUGE selection of milkshake flavors. The flies were a MAJOR turn off. I am sure the health dept. would be unhappy with the amount of flies in this place. I hope they get rid of em. I have had better fish and chips and would try a few more places on the island before coming back here.

I won't really be going be coming back here for a couple of reasons. I usually go to Friday Harbor once a year, and I tried coming here once because I was excited by the sign. When it said "Hungry Clam", I envisioned one of those hole in the wall seafood places like Ecola and Bell Buoy in Oregon, where I live. The kind of places that mainly sell seafood by the pound with nothing else. I was kind of disappointed to find a diner-style place. I mean, the food ended up being fine, not perfect, but edible, but they should rename it. Also, the other reason why I probably won't be going back there is because I accidentally pushed my lemonade glass off the table and shattered it. Yeah.....

Great service! Fish and chips were awesome, especially the chips! Incredible. While my dish was good, my friends' were sub par...but they enjoyed their malts!!

Decent view, reasonably fast service. Had the fish & chips - with the fish grilled. Fish was great! - fries were just so-so. Wife had the grilled chicken sandwich - just OK - not flavorful and "not interesting bread" - the sweet potato fries were very good.

This was one of my worst restaurant experiences in my life because I didn't get to eat! We got there around noon thinking it would be a good place for a quick meal as we had to be at our boat in the harbor at 1:45. We got the last table available (should have taken that as a bad sign). I quickly ordered so we could have plenty of time to eat. An hour later we still did not have our food! After talking to the very flustered and over worked server she assured us it was almost ready. It was not. After more time we talked to the other server (the only people working front of house on a very busy day). She apologized and said there was a huge table before us. We told her we had to leave in ten minutes (it had been well over an hour since we ordered). She assured us food was coming, and my husband even paid ahead of time and asked for it to be packed in to go boxes. I had to run to our car before the boat so I left and hoped and prayed my husband would have food when he met us at the boat. He did! And he said the server herself ran back to make it. So, she did save face a little, as we scarfed down our delicious fish and chips before we got on the boat. This place was the worst part of my vacation, what should have been a relaxing meal was an hour of stress and my 2 year old whining. Oh and the older server of the two WAS CHEWING GUM! Yuck. As I sat there I thought, "Wow, I'm in an episode of kitchen nightmares."

This place is fried food heaven! Because I couldn't decide what to have I ordered a variety and loved all of it! We started with mozzarella sticks, which were hot and crispy! Then we had the seafood combo which had cod, scallops and clam strips served with delicious fries and tartar sauce! I wanted to eat every bite, but it just wasn't possible to eat that much! My daughter had the chicken strips and helped me eat the fries. We had planned on trying a milkshake but sadly we filled up on fried food. Would definitely go back, it's adorable inside and great for kids!

Hungry Clam has a decent coffee shop style breakfast menu with daily specials posted on chalk board if you're looking for an additional bargain. Friendly, low key service make this a solid three and a half star choice for bacon, eggs, coffee and hotcakes.

We arrived on the first ferry into Friday Harbor last July and we're STARVING. It was the only place open at the time so we decided to check it out. Food was your standard diner breakfast food and they bring a lot of it. I wasn't hungry until the late afternoon after this breakfast. Bonus: there were tables outside but we opted for the inside. We watched a crow hanging out on one of the outdoor tables drinking the creamers that were out there. He would jab the opening with his beak and gulp down the creamer. Probably would gross some out, but I thought it was pretty neat.

Great fish and French fries (American "chips"). The very large fish pieces come steaming hot.

First of all, if you can sit in the little downstairs area where you can have a great view of the harbor and the ferry. We went for breakfast (they don't serve lunch till 11 AM). Food was standard diner fare...eggs, bacon, hash browns and pancakes. Everything was good, the service was fine, and they let us sit for as long as we wanted to, which was quite a while. Stick with the simple and you'll be happy.

It is what it is. There really aren't all that many options for a quick hot meal on your way to the ferry. They have decent veggie burgers and fries. The rest of my party had fish and chips and said it was pretty good. The coleslaw was dry and could be skipped. They are really good about getting food out to you quickly though if you let them know you're getting on the next ferry.

Had not been to the Clam in some time. Never liked the greasy limp fries, and I do like my fries. Trying to think of something different for breakfast, remembered The Blue Dolphin was doing same at The Clam now. We decided to go. Well, that was some time ago. Now it's The Hungry Clam for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Decor has changed, in a cute nod to rock n' roll diners of the past... maybe because they feature over 20 flavored milkshakes. I was impressed with the straight forward no b.s. menu... lacking the overindulgent cuteness found so many these days. We ordered coffee, knowing it would be bad... it was. The food, however, was not. I ordered the Thelma's Special with shredded potatoes... which was a Joe's Special with Parmesan cheese. The eggs were fluffy, and the ground beef fresh and not overcooked, with the Parm a nice addition. I never thought I'd say this about potatoes at The Clam, but the hash browns were perfect... crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My companion chose The Friday Harbor, which is pretty much the Thelma, with mushrooms in place of the meat, and cheddar for cheese. She proclaimed it excellent. Portions were healthy and we left happy and full. The place was bustling without being harried. Service was just what I like... friendly and efficient, without being ass-kissy. So, it was like going back in time to The Blue Dolphin... We'll be back again.

Went here for dinner with friends. We all had fish and chips. I had the (overcooked rubbery) baked fish. The deep fried fish across the table sounded like the better bet. I happen to like my french fries hot, fresh, and crispy on the outside. These were limp, off color, and oily through. The place was nearly empty, yet we waited 30 minutes for fish and chips after ordering?! One star for the food, three for the server trying her best.

Two visits, breakfast and lunch, on two separate trips and both were very good. Hamburger and fish & chips first time and pancakes & bacon the 2nd visit were all above average. And it works great as a departure meal location, parking your car in the ferry landing lot & walking a 100 yards to eat here. All with a scenic view of the harbor and downtown! Indoor and outdoor seating.
